Shaping Stories for the Book, the Blog,
the Broadsheet, and the BlackBerry
More than 70 expert editors gathered at the Nieman Foundation in late September for a spirited exchange of ideas, techniques, war stories, encouragement, and collegiality. It was a rainy weekend in Cambridge, but spirits were high in the Walter Lippmann House, where talks and workshops were given by such renowned narrative editors as Jacqui Banaszynski of the University of Missouri, Adam Moss of New York magazine, David Talbot, founder of Salon.com, and our own narrative program director, Constance Hale.

“What I got this weekend is total fulfillment,” said one participant afterwards. “Everything I’ve been doing for a lot of years as an editor was reinforced, and I have the words for it now. I know I can go back and inspire my writers and guide them even more.”

The weekend was a “great shot in the arm of energy and inspiration,” said another.

It was for us, too.
