This conference was sponsored by the University of Southern California Annenberg Institute for Justice and Journalism and the Nieman Foundation. Participants included Nieman fellows, fellows from the Institute for Justice and Journalism and other visiting journalists, as well as Harvard scholars Ichiro Kawachi, Evelynn Hammonds, Gary Orfield and Lani Guinier.
The conference addressed questions about how journalists cover the issues of race and class, and how the coverage of education, health and communities of color has evolved amid changing demographics and shifting interests. Hurricane Katrina brought the issues of race and class to the forefront and presented an opportunity to explore why it took Katrina and its aftermath to trigger so many stories about race and class.
