This very short piece portrays a character's small arc of change.

In early 2007 the Akron Beacon Journal started a new feature called "Sketches -- A Peek at a Slice of Life." They're very short, 9 to 18 inches. "The response has been extraordinary," Hone-McMahan e-mailed us. "Readers call daily to comment on the stories and to offer new ideas." We chose this one about an elderly woman because it's got arc: It shows one character with a problem that gets resolved, to a small degree, by the end of the piece.
