This long series provides an illuminating look at the opportunities and struggles of young blacks in the "new South Africa."

This series follows three young people in their quest to pass their matriculation exams, tests that in many ways will determine their future. It's an engrossing read; the stakes are clear and the characters engaging. We did think the first section had a basic weakness: The chapter builds toward a sort of non-climax, the taking of one exam; in the end the exam happens, but, well, nothing much happens. Overall, though, the structure works well: The piece builds toward the results of the exams, and characters face challenges along the way. Our understanding of South Africa, particularly this post-apartheid generation, was much enriched by the series.
