This piece tells the story of parents coping with the suicide of their son -- one of whom is a U.S. Senator.

Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon lost his son to suicide; he works to pass legislation aimed at preventing other young people from taking their lives. This piece blends narrative with a more expository approach to the story of Smith, his son and the issue of young people's suicide. It happens to be a good example of using narrative to shed light on the legislative process, but for the most part it's a moving story about one young man and his grieving parents.
