Harty reconstructs the experiences of seven men who survive for two days in a small raft on the open sea.

Disaster-and-rescue stories, perhaps especially when they're about shipwrecks, seem particularly well-suited to suspenseful narrative: The stakes are clear, the pivotal events usually well-defined. We liked that Harty told the story exclusively from the men's perspective at the time, without retrospective quotes or references to rescue efforts. The result is tight, quick narrative.
