This piece takes a delightful and innovative approach to a story about a school's response to the death of one of its students.

In this piece we particularly liked the clear structure and the delicate balance between light tone and gravity. "I wanted to write the piece like a children's storybook," Lange-Kubick e-mailed us, "because it is about a boy who loved to read. My first thought was to write it like 'The House that Jack Built,' but that structure didn't quite work, so I modified it." The story, she says, got lots of good reader response.
