Elizabeth Leland is a features writer for The Charlotte Observer, author of two books, "The Vanishing Coast" and "A Place for Joe" and was a 1992 Nieman fellow. She has won many writing awards, including the Ernie Pyle Award, Sigma Delta Chi's National Feature Writing Award and is a six-time winner of the Thomas Wolfe award for the best newspaper article in North Carolina.
