Who, What Where, When, and Why

WHO:
Nieman Reports, a quarterly magazine about journalism, is published by the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University. Its six-decade long mission: “to elevate the standards of journalism.”

WHAT: Nieman Reports is an invaluable resource for j-school classrooms and students. In first-person accounts, journalists provide up-to-date, on-the-ground and on-the-Web experiences in gathering, producing and distributing news and information.

WHERE: In Teaching Tools  Nieman Reports stories are sorted by topic and selected with relevancy to contemporary journalism issues – with classroom use in mind. And each issue of Nieman Reports is searchable by key words. Want to locate articles about a particular topic or by a specific writer? Try searching the Nieman Reports’ Web site.
  • Digital Newsbooks are collections of Nieman Reports’ stories created with a specific focus. To be read on digital devices such as e-readers and iPhones, these newsbooks offer up-to-date experiences from the frontlines of journalism for j-school faculty and students. WHEN: Current news about topics featured in Nieman Reports get published in our Across the Web section with links to stories, videos and blog posts. Across the Web accompanies each online issue of Nieman Reports. WHY: Professor’s Corner is a one-stop shopping experience created to respond to a pressing need in j-school classrooms. Our magazine’s real-time, first-hand accounts of what it’s like to work as a journalist today speak directly to the enormous challenges and opportunities in our ever-changing digital media environment. Personally told stories by these journalists provide insights that will provoke and stimulate classroom discussion and buttress teaching and learning.
