Journalism & the Boston Marathon Bombings:
Timing, Trust, and Credibility in the Age of Twitter
May 1, 2013, 7 - 9 p.m. at the Nieman Foundation. RSVP required.
Online: Watch our live stream and follow the conversation on Twitter: #nieman

Greetings!

Please join us Wednesday evening — either in person or online — for an important Nieman town hall meeting to discuss lessons learned from the coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings and the subsequent search for suspects. During an eventful week in which momentous news unfolded in our own back yard, serious questions arose about social media, citizen reporters, accuracy verification and the role of legacy media. The Boston Marathon bombings may well have been America's first national tragedy reported in the context of a fully interactive citizenry. It is crucial that we assess the new normal for journalists going forward.

Participants include:
  • Jennifer Peter, Boston Globe deputy managing editor for local news
  • David Abel, Boston Globe reporter and a 2013 Nieman Fellow
  • Cheryl Fiandaca, chief of public information for the Boston Police Department
  • Seth Mnookin, co-director of MIT's Graduate Program in Science Writing
  • David Beard, director of digital content at The Washington Post
  • Callie Crossley, host of WGBH Radio's "Under the Radar"
  • Moderator: James Geary, Nieman deputy curator
Our own David Abel was recording a documentary for a Harvard class at the marathon finish line when the first bomb exploded. He spent the next hours and days reporting and doing interviews for news outlets around the globe. A number of other fellows quickly sprang into action to cover events for their newsrooms at home and abroad, and visiting fellow Hong Qu analyzed how things unfolded on Twitter. I believe you'll find these and other Nieman Reports articles — including an interview with newly named Boston Globe editor Brian McGrory about coverage of the crisis “The Story of a Lifetime” — quite informative.

Sincerely,

Ann Marie Lipinski
Nieman Foundation Curator
